OUR STORY

The Education Equal Opportunity Group (EEOG), founded in 2001 under the leadership of George Thomas, addresses a critical gap in the lives of students, particularly those from historically underrepresented backgrounds. The organization recognizes the importance of mentors and guidance for first-generation students, helping them navigate the challenges of transitioning to self-reliance, achieving financial freedom, and defining success beyond high school and college.
Over two decades, the EEOG has successfully mentored over 40,000 high school graduates, with an impressive 86% of these students graduating with honors. Additionally, 30,000 students enrolled in a four-year university, and approximately 7,800 have graduated.

The EEOG extends its reach to public and rural students in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri and plans to expand its services to North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. The impact of mentorship activities is evident in the statistics, with participating students being 52% less likely to skip a school day and 37% less likely to miss a class. Moreover, youth who regularly meet with their mentors are 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to begin drinking.

The organization’s overarching goal is to break the cycle of poverty through a focus on education, service, and self-efficacy. The core belief that “You cannot be what you cannot see” underscores the philosophy of the EEOG. Their mission is succinct: to empower students to believe in their potential,
providing them with the support and guidance needed to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
